Can We Benefit From Low Carbon Energy With Such Limited Storage Resources?

Some academics have announced that the UK is in need of an ‘energy revolution’. The constant drive to keep prices low, combined with the challenges of producing low carbon energy and meeting the need for new capacity, are pushing the country to breaking point. The energy value chain is undergoing an intense rebalance, and it’s difficult to know which of our cards to play in order get a safe future energy mix. There’s a lot of focus on low-carbon energy at the moment, but shouldn’t we be addressing the issue of storage first and foremost?

Energy storage is essential to the UK’s future goals

At the moment the UK has no discernible incentive to develop an effective energy storage infrastructure, but experts are warning that they’re going to need one soon if they are to reach emission reduction targets and ‘cleaning’ its electricity supply. Without a viable energy storage system, it’s unlikely that we’ll hit our current target of 20 Gigawatts of solar generation by 2020. Many households are utilising solar, and taking advantage of more energy efficient electric heating solutions, but why is energy storage on a national scale so important?

Two UK companies lead innovation in energy storage with £8m boost

In light of the UK’s insistent pursuit of shale gas extraction and a questionable lack of funding for renewable energy development, it’s welcoming to hear some good news come from energy minister Greg Barker. Today, he announced that two leading energy storage companies had been given a grant of £8 million as part of the DECC’s ‘innovation competition’ to further research and development in the field. So how do the companies plan on using the funding?
